June 23, 1928 * WINNETKA TALK Mrs. Edgar Alden Will Give Garden Benefit for Club The Southern Woman's club of Chi- cago will give a benefit bridge party next Wednesday afternoon in the gar den of Mrs. Edgar Foster Alden of 352 Linden avenue, Winnetka. The chairman of the party is Mrs. George H. M. Vippert, 3933 Janssen avenue, Chicago. A large committee has been named to assist her in ar- ranging the prizes and refreshments for the party. The committee members are: Mrs. Edward Arning, Mrs. T. B. Bowner, Mrs. Joseph Johnson of Glencoe; Mrs. J. L. Barclay, Mrs. H. Kirk Becker, Mrs. Monroe Cockerell and Mrs. Henry Scarborough, Jr. of Evanston; Mrs. G. T. Ellis, Mrs. Drew Head, Mrs. Alfred J. Hamlin, Mrs. Joseph IL. McCarthy, Mrs. William E. Mr. and Mrs. William Coale and their children, Babs and Billy, of 607 Orchard lane, returned recently from an eastern motor trip. Johnson, 38 Abbotts- ford road, has gone to Bass Lake, Mich., to spend a month with his grandmother at her summer home. Trainman is Killed in Fall from Moving Car A. Laufenberg, 27, of Highwood, col- lector on the Chicago, North Shore and Milwaukee railway, died at the Evanston hospital Thursday noon as a result of injuries received that morn- ing when he fell from the northbound North Shore train number 511 as it was approaching Cherry and Ash streets, Winnetka. The accident occurred about 7:30 o'clock when Laufenberg leaned out from the moving train to inspect the brakes, which were not functioning properly. He fell and sustained a skull fracture, a broken arm and suffered other bruises and injuries. A wife and one child survive him. Cool Weather Keeps Down Attendance at Beaches Attendance at the Winnetka bathing beaches, which opened last Saturday, had been very light owing to the cool weather, until Thursday. On that day, with the water at 61 and the air at 81, the "parade" to the beaches began, and favorable condi- tions for bathing are anticipated from this time on. Community House to Sell "Eats" at July 4 Fete Community House has been granted a concession to sell candy and ice orgasm, at the Village Commons on July 4. The receipts from the sale will be used as the nucleus for a fund to replace various furnishings at the Community House. Mrs. Burton H. Atwood, Jr., will have charge of the booth.
