He is the oldest member of the faculty in point of service. Dr. Atwell became an instructor in mathematics and physics in Northwest- ern University academy in 1880. He was then a young man of 25, and only recently graduated from Syracuse uni- versity. Evanston was little more than a village then, and there was a wild onion patch where the Wilson avenue district now is. Elevated trains were unknown. Two years later Dr. Atwell became principal of the public schools of South Evanston, but he returned to Northwest- ern in 1884 as an instructor in natural science. He became professor of biology in 1891 and professor of botany in 1894. From 1909 to 1911, and from 1919 to 1921, he was city forester of Evanston. Sister Petronilla and Sister Mar- garet Mary of St. Joseph Mercy hos- pital, Sioux City, Iowa, are guests of Dr. Rosanna N. McKenney in her home at 752 Foxdale avenue. --0-- Miss Marguerite Doyle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Doyle, 680 Locust street, left Saturday for camp We- Hakee, at Marinette, Wisconsin, where she will spend the summer. Foregoes Trip to Russia Because of Home Business In view of the misunderstanding with respect to his decision not to go to Russia this summer as one of a party of American educators inspect- ing Russian schools and colleges, President Walter Dill Scott of North- western university this week issued the following statement: "Prof. K. E. Richter of New York university invited me to be a member of a group to visit the educational in- stitutions of Russia during the pres- ent summer. This I accepted condi- tionally, with great pleasure. It was my assumption at that time that no pressing responsibility would keep me in Evanston during the present sum- mer. Most important work has arisen such that it is impractical for me to go to Russia at this time. Further- health conditions in the family more, make it impractical for Mrs. Scott to £0. "I was in no way deterred from going because I had been informed that the Soviet Government would ex- pect from me a favorable report on conditions in Russia. From the very beginning I assumed that those who were responsible for inviting us to Russia hoped that favorable reports would be made. My understanding is, however, that no special obligations were to be imposed upon us." Miss Jean Armstrong is entertain- ing Miss Elizabeth Rudel of Montreal, Canada, for two weeks in her home at 365 Sheridan road. PATRONIZE OUR ADVERTISERS giving.
