Whitmore, head of the department of chemistry at North- western university, after a year's study of universities and chemical ir- dustries of the country is resuming his residence in Evanston and activi- ties at Northwestern. His efforts dur- ing the past year have been to bring about closer cooperation between the industries and universities and were done in his position as chairman of the division of chemistry and chemical technology of the National Research council in Washington, D. C He served prominently on the Cen- tral Petroleum committee, which is advisory to the American Petroleum institute in the administration of the half-million dollar fund given by John D. Rockefeller, Jr, and the Universal Oil Products company for the pur- pose of fundamental research on petroleum. Dr. Whitmore was elected this spring to one of the highest honors of the American Chemical society, namely, to serve as one of its direc- tors.
