July 7, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 33 New Trier Artist Does a Remarkable "Stuart" Painting Miss Jane Lyons, 1015 Greenleaf avenue, Wilmette, a student at New Trier High school, has prepared a re- production of Van Dyke's painting "Baby Stuart" which will be on dis- play at the Wilmette Public library beginning this Friday. From a small print of the famous painting in Keysor's book "Great Art- ists," Miss Lyons made an enlarged sketch of the head. She then made a tracing of the sketch, being careful to block out each shadow and change of color. Tracings were made on plain paper, with each piece of the draw- ing painted and cut out, after which the pieces were pasted together like a mosaic panel or a stained glass win- dow effect. Miss Lyons obtained the coloring for | her reproduction from a small size colored painting of "Baby Stuart" in "Day Masterpiece Miniatures." . Miss Lyons' reproduction is framed and will be on display for an indefinite period. The youthful painter has had a year and a half of art work at the New Trier High school under the direction of Miss Murphy, art instructor at New Trier. Several new books of art for adults have been added to the Wilmette Pub- lic library collection within the last year. Construct Huge Tunnel in Zion National Park | A tunnel, 22 feet wide by 14 feet high, and a mile long with six gallery portals scattered along the way, which afford stopping places where the auto- mobilist may draw aside from the trafic and view the stupendous scen- ery, is under construction in Zion Na- tional Park, where the Zion-Mount Carmel road undertakes to make a rise of 3,000 feet up the sides of a mountain, says a bulletin issued by the touring bureau of the Chicago Mo- tor club. This tunnel is driven through sheer rock, and is going forward at the rate of about 900 feet a month. Some of the galleries are 75 feet or more in length, and the arched openings will be 35 feet high. It is said that there are few places in the United States where the scenery is more impressive than from these giant portals that look out across the mammoth canyon some two or three thousand feet above the little Pine Creek, which hurries anxiously along the canyon bed.
