Canoeist From Drowning Jack McCarthy, 763 Mt. Pleasant avenue, Winnetka, narrowly escaped drowning Tuesday afternoon when the canoe in which he was riding over- turned a short distance off Elder Lane beach. McCarthy called for help and was rescued by Arthur Foster, gard- ener, and Peter Clark, assistant gard- ener for Horace W. Armstrong, 365 Sheridan road. Foster and Clark, who were eating their lunch along the lake shore when they heard the cries for help, broke the lock on the door of the beach house, got out the life boat, and made the rescue. When taken from the Carthy was not in need of a doctor's services, according to Carl Bishop, po- lice officer. This was the second res- cue that Arthur Foster has made with- in the last year. Last summer he saved a boy from drawning. 1 water Mec- | Methodist Camp Meetings Formally Opened Tonight North shore members of the Metho- dist denomination are viewing with interest the annual Camp Meetings at Des Plaines which will be formally opened this evening. Prominent among the leaders in conducting the Camp meetings are Bishop Edwin Holt Hughes and Dr. Horace G. Smith, both of Wilmette. 2,100 REGISTER AT N. U. Registration for the Northwestern university summer session has passed 2,100, according to an estimate by Dr. | Clyde L. Grose, director, based on in- complete reports from the various schools. The attendance exceeds last year by approximately 100, though the | final tabulation will probably show a larger increase. St. John's Ave. Highland Park Phone 307 ASK AID AGAINST PEST Mosquito Abatement District Seeks Cooperation of All Citizens Letters urging every citizen to co- operate in battling the mosquito are being written by a special committee from the North Shore Mosquito Abatement district and will be in the mail next week. They will contain a list of steps which the general public may observe so as not to nullify the work of the district engineers. Marvin E. Nevins of Glencoe 1s chairman of the committee drawing up the letter and Howard C. Phillips and Felix L. Streed of Kenilworth are assisting. Heat and water, the allies of the mosquito, caused the abatement squad to work overtime this week to erad- icate the breeding places. Four fire- red trucks are traveling the streets pouring oil, by an automatic device, from 300 gallon tanks in all the storm sewer catch basins. A chief inspector for the district was engaged this week by Arthur Stringer, president, to oversee the work being done, to check on the em- ployees and see that all breeding places are receiving attention. A. H. Meier, a graduate student at North- western university, was the man. Mrs. Wesley Bowman to Leave Church Work Here Mrs. Wesley Bowman, who has been secretary to Rev. J. A. Richards, of the Winnetka Congregational church, for nearly three years, completes her term of service this week.
