Varsity Will Show "Harold Teen" and "Sadie Thompson" Mary Brian and Arthur Lake will be seen in "Harold Teen," which is to be shown at the Varsity theatre this Fri- day and Saturday, July 20 and 21. The picture revolves around Harold, his conquest of the city and of his "sweetie" Lillums, and his eluding of the school vamp, Giggles. These and the other characters in the film, first came into fame in Card Ed's cele- brated newspaper comic strip of the same name from which the picture is adapted. "Sadie Thompson," one of the six best type of pictures, is coming to the Varsity for three days next week-- Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, July 23, 24, and 25. "Sadie Thompson" has been praised highly by the critics. It is the film version of the stage play "Rain," and what Jeanne Eagels brought to the role of the stage Sadie, Gloria Swanson hands the lady of the screen. "She has never done any- thing better nor looked less pretty," says one critic about Gloria. "Not for eighth-grade intelligence, but real stuff for persons of normal, healthy mentalities," says another about the picture. "The Hawk's Nest," to be shown at the Varsity Thursday and Friday of next week, is an interesting and color- 'ul melodrama of Chinatown, excel- lently acted by Milton Sills and Doris Kenyon. "Hawk's Nest" is a China- town cafe, with a mysterious unknown owner. His competitor, Dan Daugh- erty, is a scoundrel and the picture tells the story of Dan's efforts to wreck "The Hawk." Doris Kenyon, as the bewitching dancer, is lovelier than ever. Milton Sills is ably supported by Montagu Love. Esther Ralston and Gary Cooper in Norshore Film "Half a Bride," starring Esther Ral- ston and Gary Cooper, is to be shown at the Norshore theatre for one week beginning Sunday. In this picture we find Esther Ralston playing the part of a blonde jazz baby (if she may be called that) cast on an uninhabited island with a real man. Her experi- ence up to date has been with shoddy imitations. How and why she learns to appreciate the genuine article and what she does when he will have none of her is what you learn when you see the picture. It is a nice, romantic lightweight comedy drama that isn't particularly convincing, but doesn't pretend to be. Miss Ralston is still ornamental, though heavier than she was. Gary Cooper is splendid as the man who re- fuses to be bowled over by her charms. The film has been well directed and intelligently staged. On the Norshore stage next week Frankie Masters and the Jazz Col- legians will entertain in a production called "Carnival Nights." JACKIE COOGAN WILL TOUR Jackie Coogan is preparing to make an eastern stage tour, according to recent reports from Hollywood. It is understood that the varsity drag and other numbers are to be on his pro- gram. Jackie is now taking a course of training under Fanchon and Marco, stage dancers, in preparation for his tour.
