sm -- -- July 21, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 37 VARIED CONCERTS ARE ON RAVINIA PROGRAM (Continued from Page 35) one which demands finer dramatic singing. Mme. Elisabeth Rethberg is to have the title role, a part which she is well able to fill in view of the splendid power and tone quality of her voice. Giuseppe Danise, will be heard as Baron Scarpia, a role which he sang for the first time in his career at Ravinia several seasons ago and which immediately became one of the most important in the repertoire of this baritone. Mr. Danise, with his splendid bel canto voice, makes Scarpia a genuine creation. Edward John- son will appear as the heroic Cavara- dossi, to which he does full justice both vocally and histrionically, while Vittorio Trevisan will have his well known part as the Sacristan. Others in the cast are Mr. D'Angelo and Mr. Paltrinieri. Mr. Papi will conduct. Thursday afternoon, July 26, has been assigned as the time for the annual carnival for the children. This year it will be a carnival and a circus and hundreds of children in costume will participate. The carnival will be held on the beautiful north campus at Ravinia and the spectators will occupy the stadium. Children twelve years of age and under are admitted free. Another Sardou play will be given presentation as opera on Thursday night, July 26, "Fedora" with its score by Giordano, having been placed on the calendar for this time. "Fedora" contains the essence of drama, telling a story that is thrilling from beginning to end, and which is given pictorial musical setting in the score which Giordano, who likewise composed . "Andrea Chenier" has provided for it. Mme. Florence Easton will sing the name part in this opera, for which she is admirably endowed both in voice and genius for acting. Giovanni Martinelli will be heard as Count Loris, in which he has won the acclaim of Ravinia patrons on many occasions. In fact, it may be said that this is one of Mr. Martinelli's greatest roles as it makes all of those demands in sing- ing and acting, which he meets with such consummate ease. Giuseppe Danise as De Sirex, likewise has a magnificent part in this opera and he takes full advantage of all its oppor- tunities. Leon Rothier will sing the part of Cirello, which although much smaller than the parts to which this basso is accustomed, is vitally import- ant in its vocal demands. Others in the cast are Miss Maxwell, Miss Falco, Mr. Mojica, Mr. Cehanovsky and Mr. Paltrinieri. Mr. Papi will conduct. "Fra Diavolo," one of the most tune- ful of all the light operas will be Macbeth will be Zerlina and Mario Chamlee will have the title role. Mme. Bourskaya and Mr. Trevisan will ap- pear as Lord and Lady Rocburg and Virgilio Lazzari and Giordano Paltri- nieri will be the comic bandits. Louis D'Angelo will be cast as the Inn Keeper. Mr. Papi will conduct. Ravinia's fifth week will close on Saturday night, July 28, with another performance of Saint-Saens' magnifi- cent Biblical opera, "Samson and De- lilah." This work is monumental from the musical standpoint, and it is of such splendid . proportions pictorially, that it becomes impressive spectacle. Giovanni Martinelli, undoubtedly the greatest Samson of this generation will again be heard in this role, while Mme. Julia Claussen will be cast as Delilah. Mario Basiola comes to the cast this time in the baritone role and Leon Rothier will again sing the part of the Old Hebrew. Louis D'Angelo and Giordano Paltrinieri are well cast. This work is replete in splendid arias and ensembles, while the ballet con- tributes much to its spectacular fea- tures. Louis Hasselmans will be the conductor.
