August 4, 1928 WINNETK A TALK 11 KENILWORTH IS BUSY MENDING SIDEWALKS Property Owners Co-operate with Village Officials in Repairing Bad Stretches Kenilworth has taken definite steps to improve its sidewalks, which have been in need of repair for some time. Letters have been sent from the vil- lage offices to property owners whose sidewalks are in bad condition ad- vising them to make the necessary re- pairs, and the work has already been started. The Kenilworth Village board de- sires to avoid levying a special tax against the abutting properties to make these repairs, as this would be consid- erably more expensive than to have the work done by private contract. The board is therefore urging that the work be done by some contractor at an early date. Contractors Available The following contractors have taken out maintenance and liability bonds to do the work, in accordance with the Village ordinance concerning it: John Shortridge, Kenilworth; Joseph Kneip, and T. N. Mickey, Wilmette, and Charles A. Burkitt and company, Winnetka. The Village ordinances do not permit patch work, but require that the en- tire defective slab or "stone" be re- placed. The total length of sidewalks to be improved is about one mile, Officials Mark Walks All sidewalks which are to be re- paired have been marked by the village authorities. Parts where the water stands after a rain have been outlined in white paint. Low sections to be raised or replaced have been marked "R" i white paint, while broken sec- tions to be entirely replaced have been marked "X" in red paint. In many places the walks are so badly cracked as to present an un- sightly appearance, as well to be dan- gerous and inconvenient for pedes- trians. Sidewalks where the water does not drain off properly are annoying to pedestrians, and especially to school children. The village authorities hope to remedy this situation by carrying out the present plan of improvements. RETURNS FROM MINNEAPOLIS Miss Hazel Hartwell, principal of the Horace Mann school, who has been assisting Superintendent Carleton Washburne in his demonstration work at the University of Minnesota this summer, returned to Winnetka Sunday from Minneapolis. She left again on Tuesday for her home in Michigan where she will remain until the open- ing of school on September 10. William B. Cormany, 548 Maple ave- nue, William B. McIlvaine, 1029 Green Bay road, and R. C. MacNamara, 267 Ridge avenue, are Winnetka men among the committee of trustees of the Princeton club of Chicago in charge of the scholarship fund. They have awarded the scholarship for this year to a graduate of Hyde Park High school, Carter Goodpasture. ---- Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Replogle will return the middle of August from their vacation at Stony Lake, Wis. to their home at 910 Oak street.
