a og 3 August 4, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 57 Shore Theaters News 0 aa ENTERTAINING HITS Alcyon Theatre Offers Lon Chaney, Ramon Novarro, Colleen Moore, and Other Stars in Pictures This Week The Alcyon theater of Highland Park is again offering a succession of entertaining hits on its motion picture program for the week. First on the list is "Partners in Crime" with the well known comedy combination of Wallace Beery and Raymond Hatton. It is to be shown today at the Alcyon. Beery and Hat- ton dive into the underworld to dig up some new laughs and a few thrills. Beery is a detective who discovers more by accident than a Scotland Yard man could by design. Hatton | plays the double role of a reporter and gangland leader who are constantly mistaken for one another. "A Certain Young Man" is the Alcyon attraction for this Sunday. Ramon Novarro is the certain young man. In this picture he is rich and popular and spoiled--and he falls in love, of course. Miss Carmel Meyers, who is also in the picture, makes a most attractive scorned lady in a beautiful blonde wig that becomes her almost as much as her own dark hair. Marceline Day as the sweet young thing is pretty. Huntley Gordon hasn't much to do as her father, but does that little perfectly. Renee Adoree in her role of a little milliner is characteristically adept and peppy. What has been called Colleen Moore's best picture and one that places her definitely among the ranks of Hollywood's elite is "Happiness Ahead." [t is to be shown at the Alcyon for three days next week starting Monday, August 6. Colleen Moore, as the cunning child, becomes a woman--and a very lovely and ap- pealing one. Her big eyes and kid bob are the same, but the soul of all women who love and suffer shines through the eyes and makes the bob eloquent. Edmund Lowe, playing opposite Miss Moore, does excep- | tionally fine work, and the supporting | cast is excellent. Next Thursday, August 7, the Alcyon will bring back Lon Chaney's greatest success, "The Hunchback of | Notre Dame." -The picture needs no | recommendation. On Friday a war | comedy called "Buck Privates" will be shown. The action takes place in | Luxemburg. The time is just after [the war. The comedy team consists [of Malcolm McGregor and Eddie Gribbon. The heroine is Lya De Putti. CHORUS GIRLS MAY MARRY Earl Carroll has announced that his contracts with girls for "Vanities" con- |tain no provision against the girls marrying during the time of the show. This is a much discussed clause in the Ziegfeld contracts. Ravinia Opera and Concerts Seventeenth Season June 23 to September 3 Box Office Open 9:30 A. M. Until 10 P. M. "The Big Killing," to be shown at the Pearl theater Monday and Tues- day, is another of those delicious satiric comedits which Beery and Hat- ton introduced with a recent produc- tion, "Partners in Crime." This time they have taken to mountains and the backwoods mountaineers for their in- spiration, and they succeed in throw- ing an effective wrench into a neat little feud, developed over the ro- mance which threatened to mix the opposing families.
