August 4, 1928 WINNETKA TALK Winnetkans Loom as Championship New Trier Team The Winnetka baseball team con- tinued playing championship brand baseball and as a result handed Glen- coe a defeat last Sunday by a score of 6 to 5. In a previous engagement between these two teams, Winnetka won by a similar score. Playing in top form, the local outfit | turned in three double plays to pull "Lefty" Mills out of some tight places. "Lefty," by the way, substituted for Jack Slattery, who pitched for the locals last Friday evening, when they | defeated the T. J. Crowe Boosters at Welles park. Getting back to Sunday's game, Win- netka stepped on Gore, Glencoe's pitching ace, for three runs in the first inning. Lindholm singled, and was moved along on Holleb's sacrifice. Then Izard, new third base addition to the lecal club, Bill Carey and "Fid" Runnfeldt singled in succession and three runs crossed the pan. Glencoe Goes Ahead Glencoe came back with one in their half of the first, and added four more in the second, to forge ahead 5 to 3. Some heavy stick work combined with all the bad baseball that the locals pulled off all afternoon was crammed into this inning. The four runs, how- ever, concluded the scoring for the Glencoe run-getters, and from this juncture to the finish "Lefty" had the enemy eating out of his hands. Some brilliant fielding, however, also assisted materially. Winnetka kept nicking away at the illustrious Mr. Gore's offerings a picked up runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the count at 5 apiece. He moved to second on a passed ball by Carey, and continued to third on an infield out. Frankie Hohlfelder was at bat, with the tying run on third. After working the count of three and two, Frankie rolled feebly to Izard at Wilmette and lost to Winnetka. Glen- coe and Wilmette will battle again Sunday at Wilmette, while Winnetka will take on the strong Woodlawn Athletic club from Chicago. The Win- netka game will be played on the Sko- kie Playfield diamond at Elm and Hib- | pard road. A large crowd is expected to turn out for the game to cheer the leaders in the New Trier Township Championship race.
