Alexander, who received his experience in hotel management in England. For twelve years he was connected with the Savoy hotel in London, working through all depart- ments, and then with the Park Lane hotel, also in London, in a managerial | capacity. A. B. Andrews, one of the new owners of the hotel who took it over last spring, states that the policy under the present management will be "to make the hotel one of the most attrac- tive and homelike residential hotels on the north shore." Court August 4 | | "The Station Master" on Playhouse Bill for Week One of the most extraordinary mo- tion pictures yet produced by that world famous organization, the Mos- cow Art Theatre players, will be shown at the Playhouse beginning Sunday, August 5, for one week. It is "The Station Master," a foot-in-the- soil drama of Russian life as inter- preted in the novel of the same name by Alexander Pushkin. It is another of those tragic masterpieces the Rus- sians are so fond of and so expert at depicting. Ivan Moskvin, over whom America went into critical rhapsodies about a year ago, portrays the leading char- acter role, that of a dull, inconspicu- ous station master whose daughter who is also in the picture, makes a eyes. Vera Melanovskaya, the charm- ing and beautiful actress who gave such an excellent performance as the bride in "The Legend of the Bear's Wedding," plays the leading feminine role. The supporting cast is made up of other equally famous members of the Moscow Art Theatre group. As an added attraction the Play- house will present Adolphe Menjou's picture, "The King on Main Street." With Menjou in the cast are William Collier, Jr., and Bessie Love. PLAY CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP The Club championship will be at stake in the play at the Wilmette Golf club Saturday, August 4. Other im- portant events scheduled for this Sat- urday are the first round of the Rose- man trophy and the semi-final round in the Cunningham trophy. Prize events for the various Classes will feature the play this Sunday. Miss Flo McFarland is now playing the devoted juggler's wife in "Excess Baggage" at the Garrick, succeeding Miss Pauline MacLean. Miss Mec- Farland was formerly in the ensemble of "Good News." me on "Manhattan Mary," which was to have opened at the Garrick September 2, will follow the Greenwich Village Follies in the Four Cohans, it is am- nounced. T. J. Crowes Fall Before Onslaught of Winnetka Nine The strong Winnetka baseball team traveled to Welles park, Chicago, Fri- day evening of last week, and handed the T. J. Crowe's a set-back by a score of 13 to 11. The Crowe's are con- ceded to be the strongest travelling team in Chicago, and have scored vic- tories over such teams as Aurora, The Litzingers, Belle Plaines, "Hippo" Vaughn's All Chicagos, and numerous other first string semi-pro outfits. The game last Friday was really a slugging affair, and the locals simply toe holed the offerings of Dutch Grimme for a collection of nineteen base hits. Bill Carey accounted for three in the first inning, when he doubled with the bases loaded. Spec- tacular fielding by Izard, Runnfeldt and Kadison staved off defeat for the locals in the last few innings. 3 Thursday evening, August 9, the Winnetkans will journey to Welles park to take on the Strong Hollens A. C., rated one of the best teams in the Midwest league. Sunday Winnetka will engage The Woodlawn A. Cs at the Skokie Play- field. A large crowd is expected to turn out and witness the game and cheer the rampaging local outfit to more victories. ROTARIANS HEAR CHEMIST Dr. F. W. Upson, head of the de- partment of chemistry at the Univer- sity of Nebraska, spoke at the lunch- eon of the Wilmette Rotary club Wed- nesday of this week. Dr. Upson is at- tending the Institute of Chemistry at Northwestern university. Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Wolter, Jr. of 1377 Scott avenue have spent the past two weeks on a short vacation trip to Stone Lake, Wis. -- Mrs. J. Henry Carry-Carr, 1051 Spruce street, entertained a small group of friends last Friday at a luncheon followed by bridge.
