August 11, 1928 WINNETKA TALK Woodlawn Colts Easy for Local Ball Crashers Winnetka's ball team chalked up its fifth straight victory last Sunday when the locals slugged out a 13 to 3 win over the Woodlawn Colts. After the first inning it was just a matter of how large a score the locals would pile up for the Colts were not in the same class as Winnetka. The game, however, put the local batters in trim for their stiff battle with Glencoe at the Playfield tomorrow. In thé first inning Johnnie Lind- holm, who has been playing a mar- velous game for the locals lately, drew a walk, and when the catcher threw wildly to the pitcher on his return throw, Johnnie, by some heady base running, reached third. He scored a moment later on "Solly" Holleb's sacrifice fly. In the second, Winnetka batted around, scoring six runs on five hits and two errors. Not con- tented with the seven run lead, the home crew added one in each of the next two innings and gathered a clus- ter of three in the fifth. The scoring was concluded in the seventh when the locals picked up another run. The wild Colts from Woodlawn were very tame when facing Winnet- ka's hurler, "Lefty" Mills, and as a result they were harnessed easily. They managed to get a run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but by that time the Winnetka athletes had things pretty well under cover. The game proved to be a disap- pointment to many of the fans who turned out to see the boys battle against a strong team. After trim- ming Glencoe the Sunday before, by a very close margin, this game was quite a let up. To get back into con- dition, Winnetka took on the strong Hollen A. C. team at Welles Park Thursday evening in a twilight game, and they now feel that they can de- feat the strong Glencoe outfit and garner the first leg of the Hirschberg trophy which is given to the cham- pionship team of New Trier township. To date Winnetka is leading the league with a victory over Glencoe. Glencoe is in second place, having de- feated Wilmette twice and lost one to Winnetka. Wilmette is third with two defeats and no wins. Next Sunday, as has been previously stated, Glencoe will appear at the Playfield diamond. Those fans who witnessed the last two games between these two teams will assure anyone who is in doubt that a real treat is in store for them in the way of a good baseball game. All the residents are urged to attend these championship games and help the Winnetka boys bring home the cup. Tomorrow, at the Playfield, at 3 o'clock. Water Softener Latest Acquisition at Laundry Water as soft and pure as that taken from rainbarrels in olden days by the housewives with which to do the family washing, is also used by Nelson Brothers North Shore Laundry, 566 Chestnut street, Winnetka, as a result of the recent installation of a Zeolite water softening plant. The plant is installed at the intake pipe through which all water used in the laundry work passes and is treated. Its installation is in keeping with the motto of the laundry, Mr. Nelson ex- plained. In other words, "When better methods are known for doing your family laundry, we will use them," and this is one of the latest, it is explained. The new water softener plant has a capacity of 46,000 gallons every ten hours, making the soft water zero hardness as determined by soap test. There is no free alkali or acid added | Laird and Mary | Mrs. | to the water as it passes through the softener; the soft water, when used for boiler feed or cooling purposes, will not form scale, sludge or mud in the boiler or cooling jacket.
