© August 18, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 35 | Hints for Motorists OURTESY pays in motoring and good manners are essential to safer and mere enjoyable driving, declares Sid Black, vice-president of the Chand- ler-Cleveland Motors Corporation. "As the number of motor cars in- creases, so does the opportunity for good manners in motoring," Mr. Black said. "After all, the streets and high- ways belong to everybody, and no one who is at all considerate of others' rights will forget this. Most lapses from the 'Golden Rule' of courtesy are due to thoughtlessness, rather than de- liberate selfishness--but thoughtless- ness and automobile driving are a bad combination." An entirely new and unique system is being employed for remarking the Lincoln Highway. Square concrete posts are being used. On the side fac- ing the motorist will appear an arrow, cast of blue concrete, directing wheth- er he shall proceed straight ahead or turn to left or right. On the face there will be the familiar red, white and blue marker, each division being of concrete, above which will be a bronze medallion of Lincoln, 4 inches in diameter, the Emancipator's head being encircled by "This Highway Dedicated to Abraham Lincoln." The medallion will simulate a coin in its general arrangement. These are the days when people are tinkering around their cars. If you have a private garage, be sure to leave the doors and windows open when in- side. Bear in mind that in one single month ten persons in a certain State lost their lives as a result of being overcome by carbon monoxide. While the air in your garage may appear to be pure, there may be enough of this deadly, colorless and odorless gas to kill you. If you want to enjoy motor- ing, never run your engine unless the garage doors and windows are open. If you find anyone unconscious in a gar- age, drag him at once to the open air, if possible, or see to it that the doors and windows are opened. If the victim is breathing, send for help. If he has stopped breathing, start artificial respi- ration by the prone pressure method which should be known to everyone. If you don't know this system, get the information from your local safety council, Red Cross, police department, electric or gas company.
