ir Rud August 18, 1928 WINNETK A TALK 45 in Town and Country SERN ' Belle Bennett Picture Is William Haines Is Newspaper Reporter in Alcyon Picturel|| Vera Reynolds plays a leading role in "The Main Event," Pathe-DeMille picture to be shown at the Alcyon theater in Highland Park this Satur- day, August 18. The acting in this picture is abeve par. The story is the old prize fight theme. Williams Haines in his latest role as a newspaper reporter will entertain for Alcyon patrons this Sunday in a picture called "Telling the World." You will be amused as you see Haines interviewing his own father--his first assignment from the city editor--to find out why his father has disinherited him. The picture takes Haines all the way to Shanghai, where there is plenty of excitement. Anita Page, who plays opposite him, is considered one of the most important screen dis- coveries of the year. "Ramona," starring Dolores del Rio, |. coming to the Alcyon next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, is a charm- ing picture adapted from the story of the same name by Helen Hunt Jack- son. It was adjudged one of the six best photoplays during the month of June. A simple, wistful, loving, in- credibly fascinating Indian maid, born for tragedy and fulfilling her fate be- fore a background of scenery so beau- tiful that it brings a catch to the throat--that is the part played by Miss del Rio. Thursday's offering at the Alcyon is Walter Hagen in "Green Grass Widows." On Friday, Mary Astor and Lloyd Hughes will be seen in "Heart to Heart," an adaptation of a story by Juliet Wilbur Thompkins. Pictures to be shown at the Alcyon soon include "Wings," "The Street Angel," "The Wheel of Chance," "The Cossacks," and others which have been listed among the "best pictures" by the critics. Granada Will Show Fight Pictures and "The Cop" The recent fistic disagreement be- tween Gene Tunney and Tom Heeney, as recorded upon the films, will be an added attraction at the Granada thea- ter starting this Saturday, August 18. The entire fight, including the sensa- tional tenth round, will be brought to the public in conjunction with "The Cop," William Boyd's latest screen success, In "The Cop" Boyd is said to exceed his recent triumph in "The Skyscra- per," and the story itself is an en- grossing one with a delightful twist, a liberal share of comedy, and a pretty romance. Boyd (Pete Smith in the picture) isn't a cop when the story opens. He decides to be one to even scores with a crook who had got the better of him. But Pete learns that being a policeman is more than wear- ing a uniform and a star. His chief, Mather, played by Alan Hale, put: him through a stiff course of training. Pete's campaign against the gang of crooks is considerably complicated by his interest in its girl member, Mary Monks, played by Jacqueline Logan. There is plenty of action at the close of the picture when Pete goes after the gang in earnest to avenge the kill- ing of his friend. The romantic ele- ment isn't overshadowed by the more violent affairs and the way is cleared very nicely for a happy ending, with Mary a policeman's bride instead of a gangman's little pal.
