» September 1, 1928 WINNETKA TALK lla Move to Improve Servicing of Nash Cars Is Started The demand for greater efficiency in servicing cars has spurred the North Suburban Nash Sales company of Winnetka to action, with the result that an announcement is made that this company which has its service station at 728 Elm street is preparing to speed up work on Nash cars. A reorganization of the mechanical staff is under way with this end in view. O. S. Springer, north shore dealer reports that while August opened with the greatest demand for Nash cars ever recorded by the Sales Depart- ment, additional orders received dur- ing the month have placed the total number received in excess of 33,000, representing the largest demand for cars, for one month, in the history of the company. Anticipating unprecedented demand for "400" series cars, production facili- ties of all plants have been increased and, even though the plants are pro- ducing more cars than ever before, the greatest possible production for this month cannot reach more than 21,000 or 2200 cars. A new record for a single day's production was made on August 16 when 485 cars were turned out. This condition is all the more re- markable when it is realized that, al- though the cars were first announced on June 21st, just two months later 42,378 cars had been shipped to the dealer organization. Plans for September call for still further increases in production, con- sistent with the increased demand. Tourists Pay "Sojourn Tax" in France; Cities Profit Owners of automobiles have always been viewed with lively interest by tax-making bodies. In France a 'so- journ tax' is levied on all visitors to places designated as resorts. This privilege of taxing the tourist is held by 168 towns and cities in France. It is said that last year tens of millions of francs were transferred from the pockets of Frenchmen and foreigners to the coffers of these municipalities. The tax is tacked onto the hotel bill, and the hotel hands the money over to the city, which uses it to clean the streets, keep the lights burning, and to cover other municipal expenditures. A town considering itself a watering place, a health resort or an amusement center may obtain this privilege of taxing visitors by application to the government, THREE POINTS FOR SAFETY As the summer touring season brings onto the road seemingly every car capable of going under its own power, it becomes more important than ever for the individual motorist to make certain that his car is in safe condition. There are three vital points which should be most carefully checked and watched, the brakes, the horn and the lights.
