4 September 8, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 37 Viscount Allenby to Attend Legion National Session Headed by Field Marshal Viscount Allenby, of Great Britian, liberator of Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Turkish domination, a distinguishing array of American and foreign leaders will be the American Legion's guests at its tenth annual national conven- tion at San Antonio, Texas, October 8 to 12. Nat M. Washer, general conven- tion chairman, announced this week that definite acceptances have been re- ceived of the Legion's invitation, ex- tended by National Commander Ed- ward E. Spafford, from Lord Allenby, who will be accompanied by Lady Al- lenby; Major Georges Scapani, France's war-blinded member of the chamber of deputies; General John J. Pershing, commander of the A. E. F. and honorary national commander of the Legion; Colonel Charles A. Lind- bergh, the flying colonel; Judge Kene- saw M. Landis, czar of baseball. Many high ranking representatives of the United States government will attend. Among those expected are Secretary of War Dwight F. Davis and Assistant Secretary Trubee F. Davi- son; General Frank T. Hines, of the Veterans' Bureau, and his staff; Sec- retary of the Navy Curtis Wilbur and many others. Preparations for a great entertain- ment program, in keeping with the very large attendance expected and with the notable character of the dis- tinguished guest list, are going for- ward rapidly. San Antonio plans to stage a world's championship rodeo, with the leading performers competing for more than $25,000 in prize money. Sergeant Sammy Baker and Pete August, rating places among the six leading contenders for the world's welterweight title will battle it out to a decision in the main bout of a box- ing card at Fort Sam Houston stadium Tuesday night, October 9. Leading army fliers will be assigned by the war department to participate in two great air circuses during con- vention week. The Second Division will stage battle maneuvers, using all the most modern devices of warfare. A Folies Bergeres show, with beauties of five nations, will be put on. Side trips will bull fights and Spanish fiestas, will be run to Nuevo Laredo and Piedras Negras, Matamoros, the Mexi- can border and the Gulf Coast country will be visited on a two-day tour. A twelve day tour will be run to Mexi- co City and other leading cities of the southern republic. SECRETARY RETURNS Miss Gertrude Wagner, secretary to Superintendent Frederick E. Clark of the New Trier High school, has re- turned to her duties after a month's vacation. Miss Wagner spent most of the vacation at her home in Wilmette, except for a short visit at St. Louis, Mo. HOME FROM VACATION Mrs. Mabel B. Arnold, secretary of the Board of Education of New Trier High school has returned from a two weeks' vacation spent at Ephraim, Wis. Miss Dorothy Smythe, 43 Kenil- worth avenue, Kenilworth, has re- covered entirely from her recent siege of pneumonia. Miss Marjorie and Billy Smythe will be home September 9, after spending the summer at Port- age Point, Mich. Mrs. Smythe and Dorothy will follow a week later. --C Mrs. Adolph E. Salmen of 909 Linden avenue has returned from a motor trip through Canada. Mrs. Salmen was accompanied by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Cruse of Rogers Park.
