Kinney returned to Win- netka Sunday bringing with him the last contingent of boys from Ad- venture Island camp. The season just closed marks the most successful since the camp was established, Mr. Kinney states. Of the original group of north shore boys who helped build the camp Viking ship on the Winnetka beach four years ago and later sailed it 300 miles to the island in Green Bay, six were members of the camp this summer. Since the boys landed and took pos- session of the island four years ago they have gone through the pioneering stages that many of their ancestors passed through in settling America, clearing the wilderness for their tents, building a harbor for their boats, cut- ting trails across the island, building their own shop, cabin and tree houses, and clearing a playfield. The building of Eskimo kyacks by the boys proved to be a successful venture this summer, nearly half of the boys building their own boats after the design worked out by Mr. Kin- ney last winter. For young boys the craft proved to be more seaworthy than open canoes, and unsurpassed for cruising purposes, being light enough for a boy to pick up and carry on to the beach. In speed the new boats easily excelled open canoes of the reg- ulation models. The camp was visited by a large number of north shore residents this summer, many of whom have watched its development over several years. The local boys and councilors at the camp this summer were Jack Hop- kins, Alfred Price, Bill Hughes, George Thornton, Alan Bachrach, Bill Welch, Bob Holland, Webb Powell, Peter Bachrach, Harry Vale, and Ewing Johansen. Eight different states were represented on the camp roster.
