WINNETKA TALK 29 kbp poIIEESSLEESLLEEEIP September 15, 1928 Kemper Acclaims "Swede" Winberg, Football Captain Athlete Weds ® | = ant SILT, Howard Winberg of Wilmette, a former New Trier student, returned last week to Kemper Military school, at Booneville, Mo., where for the past two years he made football history for his school and won honors for him- self on both the gridiron and in the class room. He is captain of the team this fall, and his return was heralded with warm greeting and with first position in the "Who's Who" column of the school paper, which says: "The 'big Swede," who goes by the name of Howard Lee Winberg, was born in Chicago, Ill, November 5, 1905. There, in the vicinity of Chi- cago, Swede has lived all his life, (this may account for some of his hard- ness) attending grammar school and high school in the suburb of Wilmette. "In high school Howard played foot- ball for three years and (take it from one who knows) it was easier to step aside when the big Swede came through the line. "In the fall of 1926 Howard entered Kemper, arriving two weeks early for football camp at Hollister, Mo. Dur- ing the football season Swede made a never-to-be-forgotten name for him- self in Kemper football annals. In other athletics, as well, he was ex- tremely active, excelling in every sport he entered into, namely, football, box- ing and wrestling. "This year the big Swede came back for football camp and another success- ful football season. He made all-con- ference fullback and many sensational gains that will never be forgotten by Culver, as well as Kemper. "Much to his own disgust and to the sorrow of the corps, Howard had to have a mastoid operation this last win- ter and was not able to take up his yearly winter diversion of wrestling Annual Autumn NITURE SEL Startling Reductions! Clark St. The marriage of Miss Jean Dalmar, daughter of Hugo Dalmar and Mrs. Edith J. Dalmar, to Waldo Fisher, the famous Northwestern athlete, took place Thursday, Aug. 30, in the Lady chapel of St. Luke's church. Dr. George Craig Stewart performed the ceremony before the immediate fami- lies of the couple. Fisher, who won all-conference hon- ors in football and basketball while playing at Northwestern, has been en- gaged in the bond business in Chicago since his graduation in June and will join the coaching staff of the univer- sity during the fail. fori and boxing. This not only disgusted him but put a bad hole in the Yellow Jacket defensive. "The big Swede is a corporal in the bugle corps this year and is attached to Company 'A.' He is our football captain for next season and will make a real one." 1608 Chicago Avenue Pro © PIPER School Shoes for growing young feet are bounded on the north by Comfort, on the south by Long Wear, on the east by Good Looks and on the west by Economy.
