Un- til recently, the nursery has been done in a cream white with ducks and drakes running about the wall. To- day, the stippled wall has replaced that, giving the pleasant softness form- erly lacking. Furniture for the children has been made to fit their small sizes, partic- ularly the unpainted furniture which can be finished to suit the walls and drapes. The simplicity of the Early American style is best suited to the child's simple ideas, so much of the | furniture is in that style. The floors of many of the nurseries are covered with a cork flooring with small rugs over it. The chief advan- tage of this combination is that all of it may be washed, a decided advant- age when the health of the youngster is of prime importance. A true child's room has a number of built in cup- boards, of course, for the storage of all the precious toys. Daily Care of Furniture Will Preserve Surface The daily care of fine furniture will preserve its surface and the beauty of the pieces. They should be dusted daily with a soft brush and a cloth which will not leave a deposit of lint. If it is necessary to wash off the sticky finger marks often left by children, slightly warmed water and a mild soap will do no harm if part of the furni- ture is washed at a time and immedi- ately rinsed off with clear water and wiped dry. Commercial polishes should be used sparingly on waxed furniture, the best part of such treatment being in the rubbing which follows. More rubbing is required with a wax paste which should be used sparingly lest it attract dirt and leave a coating of dirt on the furniture. Good Mirrors Retain Vogue With Decorator The mirror, as an object of house- hold decoration seems to go in and out of style like bead dress trimming. That is, there is a spasmodic flurry of buying cheaper mirrors and novelty mirrors which travel home to be placed in just the wrong part, or several of them in various parts, of the room. That is what happens when mirrors are "in style" The clear mirror of good design, placed in such a way that it illuminates a dark room, is al- ways in style with the conservative decorator. PILLOWS MAKE COLOR NOTE CHEERING ROOM Modernists as Well as Antiquar- ians Use Cushion to In- crease Comfort Pillows of felt, pillows of satin, pil- lows of patchwork. The pillow is a definite note, or a whole scale of notes, in a room. Pillows are with us again. Strangely enough the modernistic room has pillows in it. They are not the good old pillows of yesteryear with their washable covers and cross- stitched design, but pillows combining rose and gray, apricot and gold, and a lot of other colors in geometric de- signs. They are triangular, oblong, round, semi-circular in shape to fit in with their surroundings. Taken in all, they are interesting but give the needle worker no chance to display her ability. In other circumstances, the pillow has become a floor decoration instead of a comfortable bolster. The floor pillow is quite a gorgeous affair, usual- ly in taffeta, with long ends and hand made flowers decorating them. Its use at the end of a couch or beside a chair gives a charming insouciance to a room. Quilted Pillow Is Vogue The quilted pillow is in vogue at the present. The ordinary quilted pil- low is made with a fine running stitch. The Italian quilting is made by run- ning a cord between parallel lines of fine stitches. This gives a slightly raised line bringing out the design in relief. The tapestry pillow is a more dur- able affair which the man of the house will not be afraid to touch. Some beautiful designs are made in tapestry by the expert needlewoman. The design is not as difficult to work as the coloring, however. Hand Work Is Seen Crewel work has come in style again for the pillow as hag the hand paint- ing in the Japanese motif. Some of the taffeta pillows have applique de- signs on them and pillows for the cot- tage are often made of patch work. For the porch, although it is at the end of the porch season, felt pillows are made of felt flowers sewn flat to the pillow, while some of them have been pasted flat with vegetable glue. Three kinds of backgrounds are used for the felt design, oil cloth, sateen, and a contrasting color of felt. The oil cloth is hard to work with, but is most attractive for a swing and open porch, For the Spanish style house nothing smarter has been designed than the iron grille which may be placed at windows or openings between the rooms.
