Whether it is for the guest room or has been taken into the dressing room of the mistress of the house, it has become an im- portant item of furniture. Most of the tables seen in shops along the north shore are unpainted pieces, a little stand underneath some with a drawer and some without, with a flat top cut in a liver shape, oblong, or an oblong with the corners cut off, anything to please the individual. The stand and separate mirror are then painted to please the decorator. Sometimes the mirrors are made with a beveled edge and an etched de- sign and hung with a cord above the table. A metal frame is often pro- vided for the small mirror. The next thing done is to dress the table. So far, it is just a painted skele- ton. For the ruffly sort of boudoir, a taffeta "skirt" can be made for the table, and instead of a top made of plate glass, the top may be made of a mirror and a dresser box of taffeta, Dresden candle sticks, and wax tapers may complete the table. A pleasant change for the person who likes to "do over" a room with the changing seasons is to make the cover of calico in a bright color with a small pattern. Very smart is the room with the window shades made of rubberized chintz, the window cur- tains to be of net. The dressing table may be covered with the same mate- rial and the scarfs for occasional tables or bedside tables may be made of the same material. Such a room is not intended to be decorated in this manner for the de- light of generations to come. The sun will bleach the window curtains '|and the occupants of the room will grow tired of it in time, but one can afford to change when the initial out- lay is not so great. The bench or chair which will be used with the table should be uphol- stered in the material used to decor- ate the table. PORCH REAL PUZZLE "Outdoor" Sleeping Room Feature of House is Hard to Cope with in Good Home Design The sleeping porch, open on three sides and screened only is impractical for the northern climate. Farther south, a sleeping porch is unheated and sometimes unglazed, heavy awnings being lowered in rainy weather. In this climate it is necessary to add the glazing and radiation to satisfy the desire to sleep out the year around. It has been difficult for the architect to adapt the sleeping porch so that it becomes an integral part of the house design rather than appearing as an after thought. The greatest benefit is derived when the porch is open on three sides, a solution to which has been found in placing the porch over a back porch. Another solution has been found in substituting the sleep- ing porch for the loggia. The porch is almost always placed to the rear of the house to insure privacy and quiet from the noise of the street. A closing of some sort, a wall or balustrade three feet high will insure more privacy, and curtains which may be drawn will keep out the curious eyes as well as the early morn- ing sun. The decoration of the sleeping porch should be taken as seriously as that of any other room. Too often the sleeping porch is the catch-all for old and discarded furniture. Needless to say, taffeta and velvet would be inap- propriate for decoration, but gaily colored cretonnes and rubberized chintz are durable materials which weather will not hurt and which maké a lovely porch. If the beds are made up with covers of attractive, durable material, with a few pillows and attractive easy chairs about, the room may be used in sum- mer time for an upstairs sun porch as well as sleeping porch. Such a sun porch will give the privacy not found elsewhere for the afternoon siesta. The floors may be covered with cork or composition and rag or grass rugs used to relieve the bareness. What wall space there is must be weather proof, as the sleeping porch is apt to be damp.
