di September 29, 1928 WINNETKA TALK HUGE CROWD EXPECTED FOR OPENING OF PLANT Ceremony Will Attend Event at $32,000,000 Sewage Disposal Unit on McCormick Road Before a crowd which is expected to total 20,000 from Illinois and several surrounding states, the sanitary district will formally open the north side sewage treatment plant at Howard street and McCormick road at a public ceremonial next Wednesday afternoon at 2. Eminent sanitarians, engineers, pub- lic health authorities and represent- atives of federal and state govern- ments are expected to attend. The plant has attracted world-wide atten tion because of its magnitude, and the event is expected to bring scientific men from many distant places. Noted Men to Speak The actual starting of operations in this $32,000,000 unit on its 100-acre site will be visible to the thousands of spectators. Pres. T. J. Crowe and other sanitary trustees will officiate and there will be addresses by celebri- ties of the professional world and pub- lic life. Use of the Televox, or mechanical many is to be made in placing the gigantic plant in operation. This re- cent invention, a robot capable of obeying spoken commands, has been provided for the occasion by the Westinghouse Electric company. An outdoor platform is being erected at the plant, just north of the pump and blower house, which fronts on McCormick road, as the stage for the first portion ot the ceremony. Follow- ing the program of addresses, which will be radio broadcast over Westing- house Station KYW, President Crowe will officially place the plant in opera- tion. An inspection of the buildings and aeration tanks, in which the entire assemblage will join, will be followed by a buffet lunch, furnished by the contractors who built the plant. Public Is Invited Special auto parking facilities and other measures for the convenience of spectators have been taken. The public generally is invited to attend. En- gineers from the Sanitary district staff will act as guides. Return to Winnetka After Summer Away Mrs. Enos M. Barton, 978 Euclid avenue, who spent the latter part of the summer at Glen Lake, Mich. with three of her sons, Evan, Gilbert, and Wilfrid, returned in time to welcome her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Barton (Andreina Materassi) upon their return {from Italy last Sunday. Andreina Materassi will give a concert on October 2, at the opening meeting of the year at the Hinsdale Women's club. Gilbert Barton has left for the East where he will be a junior at Williams college this year and Evan has returned to Johns Hopkins. Kenilworth Bride-Elect Entertained at Parties Two affairs already have been given in Kenilworth in honor of a Kenil- worth bride-elect, Miss Elizabeth Han- nah, whose engagement was announced recently. Her sister, Mrs. Sam Ross of 708 Willow road, Winnetka, form- erly of Kenilworth, has entertained at a handkerchief shower and Miss Jane Ridgway of 207 Cumberland road, Kenilworth, was hostess at a kitchen shower recently. Miss Hannah left Friday of last week to spend most of the winter in California.
