October 20, 1928 WINNETKA TALK ANTIQUED PLASTER STILL HOLDS VOGUE Rough Finish Offers Solution for Decoration; Ornaments Are Popular Walls are difficult to manage. They must be neither too plain, nor too ornate, say the decorator. Pictures are out of style now, though many people still insist on having their old friends with them. If the walls are paneled with wood, the treatment is simple. The wood is either stained or painted over with a good grade of paint which will wash well, and the insides of the panels are hung with wall paper which is renewed when dirty and faded. Some- times a room is canvased and the can- vas is painted over. Plain walls are hung with wall paper, calcimined, or painted. Lately, walls have been given a rough plaster finish which is decorated to suite the taste of the individual. If the walls of the room are not already finished in this manner, all the old wall-paper and loose paint may be cleaned off and the rough coating fin- ished. Different effects may be ob- tained by using a spoon, swirling it in different ways, or a ruler which is swirled, or using a stiff painter's stip- pling brush, pushing it into the plaster and pulling it straight out again. The sharpest of the points left may be smoothed down with sand-paper. An- other kind of flat, stiff brush will give a different kind of swirl. After any of these swirls are made, they may be softened by running the hand over them when they are almost dry. Working in Colors In painting the rough surface, one tone may be used or two tones nr be worked in. The lighter is painted on first and allowed to dry. The dark- er tone is painted on, allowed to be- come partly dry, and wiped. That is, the high points are rubbed free from most of the color while the color re- mains in the crevasses and dulls the brighter paint enough to give it a soft tone. Plaster ornament has lately come into vogue for use on this type of wall, The ornament may be used on a plain colored wall where it is the color of the rest of the wall, or it may be used on the two-toned plaster wall if it is colored decoratively or realistically in a subdued manner. Moulding Ornaments The ornament may be made by moulding the ship, knight's casque, coat of arms, or ornament desired in plastic material such as clay and then taking a paper mache mould from that. Then the damp plaster may be pressed with the mold piled high enough on the wall to form the pattern. When this dries, it may be colored. Another way of making the relief ornament is to cut an outline of the object to be moulded in a heavy board. The plas- ter is piled on the wall through the hole in the board until it is thick enough. The board is removed and the finishing touches made to the mould by the artist. In making any of these wall decora- tions it is wise to make a trial panel before attempting the wall itself. This is particularly true of the color schemes, as the coloring of these walls is a matter of delicate shading. If there is no haste about the coloring, the panel might be set up in the room a day or so to see how it will fit with the furniture. The latest in cedar chests is a long flat box which fits under the bed, an excellent way to disguise the neces- sary but unpopular red and brass- bound chest. -- On:oMarIC Owners Can't Be Wrong! g --and Now-- SMALL HOME OWNERS . . . welcome winter with the comfort and convenience of WILLIAMS Oil Heat Completely ONLY $325 Installed $50 down-- balance on easy terms | OW the owner of the small home, the cottage or bungalow can enjoy the comfort and convenience of genuine Wil- liams warmth!
