October 20, 1928 WINNETKA TALK Southern Woman's Club Lends Aid to Girl Hiker Among the projects carried out by the Southern Woman's club of Chi- cago is the helping of worthy southern girls in Chicago. This was carried out Wednesday when the club board of directors met to decide what could be done for 20 year old Peggy O'Day who had hiked to Chicago from New- port, Ky., in boy's clothing. After she had been taken to the Englewood police station and the case had come up before Judge Daniel Trude, she decided that, with the help of the Southern Woman's club, she would get a job and learn to play the violin, which she had always wanted to do. Postal Card Vote Shows Hoover Far in Lead Here Mrs. Morris Greeley, chairman of the executive committee of the Win- netka Al Smith for President club, re- ported Tuesday evening that up to that date the postal card vote which the club is taking showed 512 votes for Hoover; 200 for Smith; five were undecided and three were for minority candidates. Three thousand postal cards were sent out by the club to persons whose names were on the Winnetka water and light list. Vivian Rice, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Rice, 656 Lincoln avenue, celebrated her eleventh birthday last Saturday by inviting a number of her young friends to a party at her home from 3:30 until 6. --_--(-- Mrs. Newton Jenkins of Chicago, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Starr of 695 Prospect avenue, has re- turned from a two months' visit in France. Welfare Publishes Story on Winnetka's Schools An extensive discussion of the methods and practices of the Win- netka Public school system, together with pictures of the various schools in the village, of the children at work in their classrooms, and of several pub- lic buildings in the village, appears in this month's issue of the Welfare magazine. The article concerning the Winnetka schools is entitled, "The Winnetka Technique," and was writ- ten by Mary Pepper, a member of the staff of the magazine. COLUMBIA SCHOOL CHOSEN The Columbia School of Music has been chosen with the other represen- tative music schools of Chicago to teach the piano in the Chicago Public schools. Miss Kathleen Air isin charge of training the teachers to do this kind of teaching. Miss Air announces the publication of a new book called "In- troduction to Harmony through Mel- ody," published by C. F. Summy & Co. of Chicago. Miss Dorothy Engelhard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Engelhard of 377 Sunset road, and Miss Eleanor Kremer, 723 Laurel avenue, are two north shore girls who will be in the wedding party of Miss Grace Grey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wes- ley Gray of Ravenswood, when she becomes the bride of Warren Elmore Snyder on Saturday evening, Jan- uary 9. i Mr. and Mrs. Alvin E.
