70 WINNETKA TALK November 3, 1928 How About That Basement? Pretty It Up With Paint A cellar will appreciate the bright- ening effect of a couple of coats ot good cement paint applied to the walls and incidentally it will be fortified against the encroachments of damp- ness by this process. If you choose a good paint, you will have a resulting surface that is dense and hard and permanent. It will not peel, chip, blister or chalk off and strong soap and water ever may be used to keep it clean. Be- sides making your basement a more cheerful place to work in, it will as- sist in damp proofing it. Chicago Attorney Buys Vacant in Kenilworth Charles F. These man- tels are cast from a combination of marble, cement and other ingredients, and may be had in different colors and designs. For instance, if one wants the effect of a stone mantel, these come in plain shades to give the appearance of natural stone but at less cost. There are also two tone effects which blend in well with the rough plaster walls of the modern home. As for the dur- ability of these mantels much is claimed. They will last a lifetime, it is said, and since they are not affected by heat they can be used with any type of fireplace. When cleaned, all that is needed is soap and water and a good brush. Double hung windows are manu- factured which tilt at various angles and may also be locked in these diff- erent positions. Not only is the wash- ing of the window made easy but at certain angles the rain cannot come in, nor can the curtains blow out and collect moisture and dirt. It is claimed for these windows that their installa- tion is simple. The frame and the window alike are made of standard stock and their hardware is not diffi- cult. High grade weather strips come with the window, making the window draftproof as well as wind and dirt proof. These windows are also im- mune to sticking or rattling because of the arrangement of the hardware. There are metal weatherstrips on the market which you can have in- stalled without removing doors or win- dows and with no special tools or equipment. Strips are obtainable with clean-cut nail holes punched clear through and with special copperized, rustless nails for attaching. Weather- strips, metal or other kinds, provide a saving in coal bills, an elimination in drafts and a possible saving or doc- tor's bills when the zero winds begin to blow. Keeping up the exterior appearance of one's home keeps up the real es- tate value of the grounds as well as the building. One home, fallen into dilapidated condition not only depreci- ates tremendously in its own value but tends to lower the value of all the homes along the street. Tile Made of Cork Is Now to Be Had in Varied Colors Cork tile, through its resiliency and durability, takes its place among the excellent floor coverings now available to the home owner. This tiling may be obtained in different sizes. From 3x6 inches to 12x36 inches, it can also be had in various shades. These different colors are obtained by different tem- peratures in baking, and because it is well compressed it possesses strength and durability. Simple soap and water is used to clean it, and its care is not difficult because of its immunity to grease and dirt and to most liquids. It also pos- sesses insulating value, adding to the warmth of the floor. A. H. Ullrich to Remodel Campus Theater Building Maher and McGrew, Evanston archi- tects, are drawing up plans for the re- modeling of the old Campus theater building into a modern office building. The ground floor will be devoted to commercial uses and the second floor will contain professional offices, ac- cording to Albert H, Ullrich, the own- er. The architects are planning to finish the facade of the structure in a modernistic spirit.
