It was deemed advisable that the widest publicity be given this subject, and Dr. Orvis has prepared the fol- lowing list of questions and answers which every parent, it is thought, will find it profitable to read: Wateh Children's Throats Why? In the first six months of 1928 there was an increase of over 500 cases above the figure of 1927 for the same months. In Chicago it is more prevalent than for many years. It is also more virulent. Have we any cases of diphtheria in Winnetka? Yes we have one case. Is this disease liable to spread to our community? Yes, as long as there are many cases of the disease in the metro- politan area of Chicago we must watch carefully, for people are mingling very freely and many may be carriers ped- dling the infection to those with whom they come in contact. Isolate him in a room ty himself, keep him away from the other children and above all do not let him go to school. Suppose my child should contract diphtheria, is there an effective remedy? Yes, antitoxin is an effective remedy especially if given early in the disease. How much difference does it make if antitoxin is given early. Statistics froin the Philadelphia General hospital for © years show that when antitoxin was given the first day of the disease in 742 cases none died. When delayed to the second day 5% of the children died; when delayed to the third day 8% died and when delayed to the fourth day 10% died. Then it is important to learn if a child has diphtheria as soon as he is sick? Yes, it is vital. Is there no way I could prevent my children having diphtheria? Yes, by hav- ing them immunized against the disease. What is this process of immunization? It is accomplished by giving at week in- tervals 3 injections under the skin of a preparation called Toxin-Antitoxin. T. A. T. is now prepared with sheep serum and does not make a child sensi- tive to horse serum preparations. Is this harmful or painful? No, it is not harmful. It is no more painful than a hypodermic for any other purpose. The amount injected is only % of a tea- spoonful. Does this make him immediately im- mune to diphtheria? No. It begins to be effective two to four weeks after in- jection and reaches the height of ef- ficiency in 3 to 6 months. What Is Toxin Antitoxin? What is this Toxin Antitoxin? It is a mixture of the toxin or poison pro- duced by diphtheria bacilli growing on suitable food materials in the labora- tory with the antitoxin or antidote pro- duced in the blood of a sheep which has been given this same toxin hyperdermic- ally. Would it not be just as well to give the child antitoxin without the toxin? No. A larger dose of antitoxin would immunize the child for a few weeks, then it would run out. By giving the toxin with the antitoxin the immunity is de- veloped in his own blood and it lasts for years. Is this immunization always effective? In about 90% of children it is fully ef- fective and in others partially so. How can we tell whether my child is among that 10%? By a test called the Schick test which is the injection of a drop of the diluted toxin into the skin. It produces a red spot the size of a dime if the child is still susceptable. Could the child in the 10% class, with incomplete immunity be made wholly im- mune? Yes. By further injections of Toxin Antitoxin. Some Naturally Immune Are some children naturally immune? Yes, especially the older groups. Can this be determined by the Schick test before giving Toxin Antitoxin? Yes, it can. Would it be better to determine whether the child is immune before giving Toxin Antitoxin? Yes, it probably would, especially among the older groups, but under five years, where a high percentage are suscepiable, it is not considered of great advantage to do the Schick test first. Do you give it to the children before they go to school? Yes, it is important to give it early because over half the deaths occur before 7 years of age. Damage Develops Are little babies susceptable? Yes, after 6 months of age they are suscept- able. Diphtheria is very fatal to young children. Do many children die from diphtheria now? Yes, 647 died last year in Illinois and 320 in Cook county. There will be more this year. Could all these children have been saved if they had had Toxin Antitoxin? Yes, over 600 children in Illinois and over 300 in Cook county would now be alive if they had had the privilege of this treatment before last year. Will we he sacrificing that number each year because of our neglect? Yes, we have been allowing from 400 to 600 each year go to the great beyond and if we do not check it, it will continue. Has this been done in any other cities? Yes, in some cities like Birghamton, N. Y., New Haven and others they have stopped this thing. - CIRCLE HOSTESSES Mrs. W. T.
