Phone University 8600 | provide satisfactory winter driving. Prepare Car Now for Winter Drive, Wersted Advises The arrival of winter with its snow- storms, biting winds and accompany- ing motor difficulties prompts W. T. Wersted, Winnetka Dodge dealer to make a few suggestions which if fol- lowed will remove from winter driving many troubles which beset the mo- torist who has been careless enough to 'let things go." "One of these nights it's going to freeze hard and then what?" asks Mr. Wersted. "The careful car owner won't need to worry because he's been foresighted and has had his car to his service station where the business of checking the battery, the cooling system and heaters, the changing to winter grease and various other prep- arations for cold weather driving have been taken care of. "A little timely attention right now will avoid trouble and expense later on. And it is important that there be no delay because a little later there will be a rush which will prevent us from giving the car the close personal at- tention we have time to give it now." These are a few of the suggestions Mr. Wersted makes: Alcohol or other anti-freeze is abso- lutely necessary to avoid freeze-ups and But first have all of the cooling system looked over, renewing worn out hoses, repacking water pump, replacing worn- out pump shaft, and repairing radiator leaks, because anti-freeze will find even the smallest hole. | | months, not less than every five hundred miles, because condensation takes place in the crankcase and water is bound to accumulate. Draining the crankcase will save a possible freezing of the oil pump and also remove the "raw" gasoline which increased use of the choker creates in the crankcase oil. The old, gritty, worn-out, summer grease in the differential and transmis- sion will not flow in cold weather, so the gears and bearings will have little or no lubrication. It should be drained and flushed out with our new power-driven gear flusher, and refilled with lubricant that is guaranteed not to freeze at fifteen degrees below zero. 4 Perhaps the generator charging rate should be increased to keep your bat- tery full, because the starter and lights use more current during the winter. Or perhaps the battery terminals need clean- ing and the battery needs charging. The motor also needs attention. Any weakness in compression, ignition, or faulty carburetion, will cause trouble very readily in cold weather. These things should be inspected and put in good order, if needed. You are going to need your heater soon. It will pay you to have it in- spected now for leaks and corroded con- trol valves. A radiator shutter will help your mo- tor behave all winter and is beneficial at any temperature below sixty degrees. Soon wet and icy streets will cause accidents, endangering life and damaging property. Have the right size tire chains in the car and see that your brakes are in good order. BATTERY MAKER DECLINES According to data collected at the bi- ennial census of manufacturers in 1928, establishments engaged in manufacture of batteries in 1927 reported products valued at $150,451,796, a decrease of 3.1 per cent, compared with $155247811 Change oil frequently during the cold for 1925, the last preceding census year.
