The article details the original report of the fire on May 25, 1948 by a pilot on a routine mapping flight. At the time of the report it was noted as a 15 acre smolder on the south shore of Rocky Island. Fire fighting efforts continued through to August of that summer with a final estimate of 3/4 of a million acres of forest being lost to fire.
