Danceathon nets $1,000 for arena
IRON BRIDGE - A "skatathon" to raise funds for artificial ice at the Iron Bridge and community arena had to be turned into a "danceathon" due to the mild weather, but, nevertheless, it was a great success.
In all, 75 students from Grades 1 to 8 danced from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 Wednesday with 10-minute breaks every hour.
The event was sponsored by the Recreation Committee which offered prizes — first $15, second $10 and third $5 — plus trophies — for those bringing in the most money through pledges. It is not known exactly how much money is being pledged, but it is expected that the total will be more than $1,000, which should be collected within two weeks.
Supper was served to the dancers by the committee and other help. June Cameron was the disc jockey for the evening — with stereo and records on the spot. Adults and students alike seemed to have lots of fun.
This event was just a part of the drive for funds for arena improvements. The goal is to raise $115,000 locally. So far, $50,000 has been donated, largely through the Lions Club and the Recreation Committee's Bluegrass annual events. The club hopes to receive a grant from Wintario to bring the total to $231,764.
A thermometer has been placed on the side of the building to indicate progress in the drive.
