- This picture, featuring a wooden, horse drawn wagon beside a wall of limestone, was taken in the Quarry on Water Street before it was allowed to fill with water in 1930. The quarry opened in the mid 1800's but later joined other quarries to form the the Thames Quarry. The company mainly quarried limestone slabs to be used for construction in the town and surrounding areas but smaller chips or powder were also used for other purposes. With the arrival of the St. Marys Cement Company in 1912, the demand for limestone slabs started to decrease until the quarry was no longer needed. By 1930 all usable pieces of machinery were taken out and the two quarries on either side of Water Street were allowed to fill. Though locals began to swim in the pools almost immediately it was not purchased by the town until 1945 and the first official opening for swimming didn't occur until summer 1946. Today the quarry is still a popular swimming location.
