- Description
- This house was constructed for Andrew Nicol in 1876. Nicol and his family were notable residents of St. Marys in the late 19th century. Nicol ran a livery stable, worked as assistant postmaster and built and sold houses as an investment. By 1878 the house was sold to William Andrews of Andrews’ Jewelers.
The Andrews family owned the property until 1945, when it was then purchased by the Cook family. The Cooks continued to own the property until 1987, with several other inhabitants living in the home from 1987 to the present.
The house was likely built in two stages. The first stage is believed to have been completed in 1876, and the second in 1896. In its original state, the house had a simpler porch with shutters and brackets. From the mid-1860s to the mid-1880s L-shaped houses were commonly seen in the area. These styles of houses often contained a veranda, important social rooms for Victorian families. The houses of the late 19th century included such details such as bay windows, gables, and brackets which can be seen on this property.
