- Description
- The Tracy House was built in 1854, by early settler and land owner George Tracy. Robert Barbour was the builder responsible for the design of the house. The house soon became known as the “Castle in the Bush”. Tracy and his wife Elizabeth and five children, lived in the home for four years before George and Elizabeth moved to the United States, where his son George Jr. was living at the time.
The McDougall family were the second family to live in the home in 1858. Joseph McDougall owned an iron foundry and hardware store on Queen Street and was the first to arrive. His father Daniel McDougall was a successful businessman, and the owner of a local grist mill, as well as working as a justice of the peace. The family named the house “Cloudesdel Hall”.
The McDougalls lived on the property for several years before it was sold to John Weir in 1878. The Weirs were the family responsible for naming the surrounding land “Cadzow Park”. In the 1920s the Town of St. Marys purchased the property when it was transferred by John G. Lind. Many tenants lived in the house for several decades, and the building has housed the St. Marys Museum since 1959.
The Tracy home is situated on a hill overlooking the surrounding townscape, giving the property an exquisite view. Similar style houses have been built elsewhere in Perth County, but this home is an earlier example of the style. The house was built entirely of locally quarried limestone, and features grand pillars at the front entrance as well as some ginger breading details. This house is a historically designated structure.
