Description

This house was built for Elizabeth James in the late 1850s. The structure was built close to the street, a sign of early construction. She purchased the land the structure was built on from James Ingersoll in 1854. It is presumed she lived here with her husband William James, a local cooper, until she was widowed. This house is one of St. Marys’ oldest stone buildings. The house is made of rough textured limestone, giving the home an interesting façade. The stonemason responsible for the house was Henry Andrews.

Almost all of the shutters can be seen intact in this photo; however, the shutters have since been removed from the windows. Note the recessed windows on the second level; they were built low to the floor of the second storey, an unusual feature. This house is a historically designated structure.

Notes

Condition: Good - Image is clear. Slight damage around bottom edge of the photo. A small dark stain is on the image near the top edge, towards the centre of the image.
