- Description
- The cottage in this photograph, taken in the early 1970s is no longer standing, however it was once located on the lot at 752 Queen Street East. The house was built for Robert Birtch, constructed sometime in the late 1850s. This triple-brick cottage is believed to have been one of the earliest brick structures in St. Marys. Birtch lived in the house with his wife Nancy and their three children, Sarah, Mary and Nicholas. Birtch was an early settler of St. Marys and also ran a successful farm with his family.
The dark line seen on the front façade of the house is wood, used to support a veranda that was removed long before this photo was taken. The doorway in this photo is original; however, the dormer windows were added at a later date.
Hard copies of this image can be accessed at the St. Marys Museum & Archives. - Notes
