- Description
- This storey and a half cottage was built for John Bartlett, a local man who ran a bakery and grocery business. The house was built ca. 1889-1890. The property was used for rental income by Bartlett; he never resided in the house himself. Leonard and Beatrice Harstone lived in the house along with their newborn son Robert. Leonard worked as a lawyer and town clerk; he lived in the home with his family until in 1915, when the family moved to another larger home owned by John Bartlett’s widow at the time.
This house was built using light coloured brick, a common sight in early St. Marys houses. The house also features a central dormer with what appears to be a neo-gothic inspired arched window at the front of the house under the roof peak. Arched brick lintels have been placed above all windows on the façade and decorative brick quoins on the house corners. The front door is surrounded by pilasters on either side and an elegant crosshead is placed over the door. A transom window and sidelights allow more light into the entryway. The shutters seen on the house are still in place today. The original veranda was removed some time before this photo was taken; however, it has since been restored.
