- Description
- This white frame house was built in 1873 by carpenters James Craig and James Hamilton; both men were prominent builders in St. Marys at the time of the house’s construction. James Craig lived in the home with his family until 1880.
By the year 1869, Craig and Hamilton were partners and owners of the Craig and Hamilton planing mill once located at the corner of Water Street North and Parkview Drive. The firm was given carpentry contracts for the construction of three notable St. Marys buildings, the St. Marys Collegiate Institute, the first Knox Presbyterian Church and the Opera House. The original house consisted of the front section, seen in this photo, and a one-storey kitchen wing. The second-storey of the wing along with the veranda were likely added by Michael Tevlin, another carpenter who owned the house from 1875 to 1917.
The house is a historically designated building. The house’s clapboard siding has been maintained over the years and the house has retained many of its original features. This designation includes the looping bargeboard, the veranda and its fretwork frills, and the double-hung sash windows. The house is one of the oldest remaining frame houses in St. Marys.
