Description

A photograph displaying the use of steam technology in quarry drilling at Horseshoe Quarry in 1903. The steam drill was used to crack into the limestone shelves and break off sections of rock. The worker is bracing against the quarry wall and the drill is set into a tripod with weighted legs to keep it upright while the drill bit is driven into the rock. At this time, technology has outpaced the progression of labour safety requirements.

The Horseshoe Quarry predated the cement company in St. Marys. The quarry provided stone for cement making before the company began to quarry its own stone. The quarry was located at the far south end of Church Street and was close enough to the rail line that the Grand Trunk ran a short spur to the quarry to load stone. Milton Reesor took several photos of the Horseshoe Quarry and the men at work.

Notes

Condition: Excellent - Image is very clear. Little to no discolouration. No damage to photograph. Album matte is stained and discoloured around edges.
