Description

A photo giving a view of the floor of the Horseshoe Quarry in 1903. The photo was taken by local amateur photographer Milton Reesor. Quarry workers are loading cars with stone. A car is being winched up the ramp into the building in this photo. The Horseshoe Quarry predated the cement company in St. Marys. The quarry provided stone for cement making before the company began to quarry its own stone. The quarry was located at the far south end of Church Street and was close enough to the rail line that the Grand Trunk ran a short spur to the quarry to load stone.

The quarrying industry in St. Marys, which started in the mid 19th century, provided important work for the trades such as masons, stonecutters and contractors. General labourers were also required to extract and process the stone, cart it by the cord to building sites and load and unload the wagons. The work was difficult, often dangerous and a large amount of the work was seasonal. Despite this, quarrying was a significant local industry.

Notes

Condition: Excellent - Image is very clear. Little to no discolouration. No damage to photo paper. Album matte is discoloured and stained around the edges.
