Description
This photo, taken by local amateur photographer Milton Reesor, shows a locomotive derailment on the Grand Trunk Railway on July 28, 1903. It is one photo in a set of two. The accident occurred on the main line of the railway. There were two derailments in one day, only six hours apart. This is an image of the second wreck.

A westbound freight derailed near the St. Marys Junction Station, due to a brake coming loose. Three boxcars jumped the track and overturned. At this time, when a locomotive or freight cars were overturned, a steam powered lift crane known as a "big hook" was used to clean up the wreck. However, the Stratford Auxiliary wrecking crew appeared to have used a different form of lifting device. A lifting jib is located at either end of the device. A heavy cable was used for lifting and threaded through the device.

The boxcar has been righted in this photo and one end raised to allow workers to roll a wheel set under the car. The cable would be attached to the front coupler of a steam engine to provide the pulling power.
