Description
This photo features a freight train in St. Marys along with the crew, including what appears to be the engineer on the far right and a fireman on the far left. This style of locomotive was commonly referred to as an American locomotive due to its popularity in the United States. The locomotive is number 590, seen on the headlight casing, on the steam dome, on the sides of the tender and on the brass plate below the headlight. This steam engine was likely built in either Montreal or Kingston.

Local photographer Milton Reesor captured this image. Reesor referred to this specific train as the "Cannon-Ball"; however it was not a term applied by the Grand Trunk Railway. It was possibly in reference to a late 19th century folk song about a fictitious fast passenger train; the song was titled "The Wabash Cannonball".
