Description
This photo gives a view of a steam engine wreck on the Grand Trunk Railway's main line that occurred on September 4, 1900. Milton Reesor, a local amateur photographer, was able to capture the scene after the accident. A large amount of debris litters the embankment. It is believed that the white powder strewn about the site of the derailment is plaster of paris (also known as gypsum plaster) originating from Paris, Ontario.

The locomotive number 704 is visible on the steam dome. This style of steam engine was commonly referred to as a "Mogul". The smokestack is bent and broken. The accident occurred when a heavy freight train heading west stalled on the grade approaching the Sarnia Bridge. The steam engine reversed to prepare for a second attempt and was standing on the bridge when a second freight train came around the sharp curve a few hundred yards east of the grade. The engineer failed to spot the stalled locomotive ahead and collided into the caboose. The caboose, a freight car and the second steam engine were all badly damaged.

A wrecking crew arrived from Stratford to clean up the site. The St. Marys "Journal" newspaper reported that the noise of the collision was so loud it was heard across town. The home visible in the background is still standing today and is located at 176 Water Street North. This photo is one in a set of three showing the derailment.
