- Description
- This photograph features the CPR Locomotive 391. The photo is dated on the back: May 23, 1908. Currently, the photographer is unknown; however, it is possible the photo was taken by Webster & Co., a local studio.
Men dressed smartly in suits are posing around and on top of the steam engine. Some of these men would have been a part of the railway crew for this locomotive. Boys have also gathered around the engine, some standing barefoot. The steam engine is located at some point along the track that formerly ran beside the Thames River, where the Riverview Walkway is today. This rail line opened in 1908 as a spur of the CPR from the Zorra Station to St. Marys.
The stone piers and iron structure to the left of the photograph has been identified as the Park Street Bridge. "C.P.R. 391" is printed on the locomotive beneath the cab window; the number is also emblazoned on the tender at the back of the engine as well as on the round brass plate at the front of the smokebox beneath the headlight. This locomotive was built in Montreal in 1891; its use discontinued in 1922.
For more information, see the Historic St. Marys interpretive plaque on the Riverview Walkway at approximately the same spot this photograph was taken in 1908. - Notes
