- Description
- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. It features a two-storey brick home covered in lush ivy. The house contains features commonly used in late 19th century house building such as the L-shape of the structure and the gable roof with its ginger-breading details. An addition has been added to the back of the home. Lightning rods are visible on the roof of the home.
The family living in the home are posed outside on the front lawn. A mother and father are standing with their two little girls next to the woven wire fence enclosing their front property, a new style of fence at the time. A black and white cat is lying at the end of the porch. The family appear to be dressed in their good summer clothes.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 10(?)8, the third number is illegible. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County.
