- Description
- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo shows a storey and a half brick house in the country. An unidentified group of people, likely a family, is standing in front of the home. An older man and woman are sitting in chairs on the lawn. Three young men and a young woman are posed behind the elderly couple. The boy to the far right is posing with a bicycle, a dog is standing behind him.
The house features arched windows with decorative brick headers. Rounded windows can be seen at the front of the house with shutters designed to fit their shape. A small front porch adorns the front of the house. Planters hang from the porch ceiling. The hollow, square porch pillar is elaborate in its styling; the porch brackets are quite ornate as well. Decorative finials sit on the peaks of the roof and carved bargeboard runs along the eaves. The photo gives a view of the stained brick on the side of the house, resulting from a leak around the chimney. Several cracks have also begun to form on the brick wall around the windows. A wooden barn is visible through the trees to the right of the photo.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 998. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
