- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo features a large barn and silo with two men and a woman posing in front of the buildings. The man to the right is standing with a team of harnessed horses and a foal. Another man is holding the lead of a horse with a foal standing nearby. An additional horse can be spotted to the far right of the image. A dog is lying in the shade of a tree to the right.
A woman is standing on the ramp leading up to the barn. This style of barn was known as a bank barn. It was a rectangular structure with two levels built into a bank or sloped ground. The lower level was used to house animals such as horses and cattle. The upper level had a ramp, seen here, that allowed the hay wagons to access that level. The second level was normally hay storage and a threshing floor. The livestock on the ground floor were protected during the winter due to the insulating hay above them. Note the incomplete concrete silo to the left of the barn; it appears to be missing its roof.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1035. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Fair - Image is fairly clear. In the lower half of the plate, the glass is cracked horizontally across the entire width of the plate. Oxidation over entire negative, most severe in upper half. Emulsion deterioration along right edge (1cm at widest point). Another spot of deterioration on bottom left edge (length: 3.5cm, width: 1.5cm). Slight deterioration of emulsion in upper half overall. Several small spots of emulsion loss on negative, largest in upper left corner (1.3cm x 0.8cm).
