Description: This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo gives a view of a rural family and their farm. A man and a woman are posing in the front yard of the home. A small girl is standing between the couple, presumably her parents. Both the man and woman are well-dressed, with their clothes looking clean and neat.

The house behind them appears to be covered in wooden shiplap boarding. The house has a ledge above the foundation that will support brick in the future. Additional features on the home include, an arched window in the central dormer and ornate, decorative bargeboard on the roof peak. The family is standing in front of a wire fence enclosing their property.

Two barn buildings are visible in the background of the photo to the left of the house. The barn in the foreground is an example of a bank barn. This style of barn was built into a bank or sloped ground. The ramp allowed hay wagons to access the upper level where the hay would have likely been stored. The lower level housed the farmer's livestock; in the winter time, the animals would have been protected by the insulating hay above. Note the carriage on the ramp leading into the barn. A team of horses are standing harnessed in the barnyard along with a dog.

The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.

This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1041. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County.
Notes: Condition: Good - Image is very clear. No visible damage to glass plate. Small amount of oxidation around outer edges. Oxidation most concentrated in lower right corner (1.3cm at widest point) and upper right corner (1.6cm at widest point). Spot of emulsion loss in upper right quadrant (length: 3cm, width: <1cm). Spot of damage to emulsion near upper right edge (length: 4.2cm, width: 1cm). Dark smudge on emulsion in lower half (length: 4cm, width: 2.5cm). Light scratching on emulsion surface. Several areas of fingerprinting on negative in lower right quadrant and upper right half.
