- Description
- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo features a family posing in front of their farmhouse. The group consists of a man and a woman, possibly the parents of the children, four girls and three boys. A young man is also posing for the photo, it is unknown if he is a relative of the family. All individuals in the photo appear to be wearing good clothing. A dog is standing in front of the family.
A wire fence surrounds the yard of the home. Thick shrubbery can be seen growing along the fence. Despite appearing to be fairly simple in its construction style, this storey and a half shiplap house features several esthetic design elements. It has a central dormer with an arched Romanesque window. The roof peak is adorned with decorative bargeboard and an ornate finial. The front door is open, exposing the interior of the house where a rocking chair sits in the entryway. Various potted plants and flowers are sitting in the window sills of the home. Several barn and/or shed buildings are visible behind the house. A horse is standing in the barnyard to the right.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1056. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
