- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo shows a family of seven posing in front of a board and batten farmhouse. An older man and woman are sitting in chairs on a walkway leading to the house. Three young women and a young man are standing behind them. Two boys are kneeling in the grass to the left. A man is sitting to the far right on a tree stump with a hat in his hand.
A woven wire fence surrounds the front of the property. A cat is lying in the grass in front of the house. The house appears to have two frame additions at the back. A verandah can be seen at the back of the house. A barn stands behind the house, seen in the background to the far right. Note the door to the root cellar at the side of the house behind the family. Two lightning rods are on either side of the roof near the chimneys.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1116. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Poor - Image is fairly clear. Large portion of glass plate is missing - upper right corner (length: 12cm, width: 3.5cm). Loose piece of negative glass in envelope from upper right corner (length: 6.5cm, width: 1.5cm). Plate is cracked in upper right quadrant, two cracks in total: upside down Y-shaped cracks attached in upper right corner (length: 6.5cm). Minor oxidation around outer edges. Some emulsion deterioration along right edge and left edge (<1cm at widest point). Small scratches on surface of emulsion.
*Handle carefully. Sharp edges and fragile glass. - Dimensions
