Description: This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo shows a family of five posing in front of a large two-storey brick house in the country. The portrait includes a man and a woman, likely the parents, sitting in chairs on the lawn of the home. Two young girls are standing on either side of the couple and a little boy is standing between them. The family is well-dressed. The man is wearing a light coloured jacket and vest and the woman is wearing a white blouse with a dark skirt. The little girls are wearing ruffled dresses and the boy is dressed in a fancy ruffled shirt with a dark jacket.

The house is quite grand. It appears to be constructed with dark brick. The house features arched windows with decorative brick headers. One of the windows has a border of stained glass. The peak of the house has two small, deep-set windows surrounded by scalloped shingle detailing and ornate bargeboard. The two small rectangular windows feature a stained glass border. The house has fancy brackets under the roof eaves and a small porch and balcony. Painted ginger breading can be seen on the porch. The shingles on the roof are in a "fish scale" style. Various flowers and shrubs have been planted along the front of the home.

The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.

This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1642. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County.
Notes: Condition: Poor - Image is clear. No visible signs of damage to glass plate. Severe oxidation and area of deterioration along right edge of plate (6.5cm at widest point). Small area of emulsion loss in upper right quadrant (<1cm in size). Slight emulsion deterioration around all outer edges. Tiny spots of emulsion loss throughout surface of negative. Large amount of fingerprinting in lower half of negative.
