- Description
- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo shows a shiplap farmhouse and a group of three people posing for a portrait. A woman is sitting in a chair to the left; a dog stand beside her. A younger woman is kneeling in the grass and posing with her hand on the dog. The face of the man to the far right is obscured due to damage to the original negative. The man is holding a push mower.
The house is a storey and a half with a large verandah that wraps around the front of the building. Potted plants have been placed on the porch and on interior window sills. A board and batten addition appears to have been added to the back of the house; additions such as these were commonly built to be used as a summer kitchen. A large wood pile can be seen to the left behind the addition.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1901. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Poor - Image is clear in visible areas. No signs of physical damage to the glass plate. Small amount of oxidation around outer edges, most severe in upper left corner (area length: 4cm, width: 2cm). Small spots of emulsion loss in upper left corner and along top edge (<1cm in size). Severe are of emulsion loss in lower left corner (length: 6.5cm, width: 5cm). Small areas of emulsion loss in centre of negative (length: 3cm, width: 1cm) and along lower edge (length: 4cm, width: <1cm). Light scratches on surface. Large amount of unknown residue has adhered onto emulsion surface, covers entire right half of negative and appears to have "spilled" partially into left half.
