- Description
- This photo, taken in the 1980s, shows the house located at 121 Carrall Street. It was built in 1867 by Scottish stonemason Daniel McAnsh. McAnsh moved to the area from Scotland in 1844. The house would later be occupied by several owners including Archibald McCallum, Michael Griffin and Philip Sydney Riddell. Eventually, the house became known locally as the "Lind House" due to its notable owners the Lind family. In 1937 John Grieve Lind of the St. Marys Cement Company purchased the home. Lind bought the property as a wedding gift for his son, John S.H. Lind and daughter-in-law Margaret McHugh. The Linds lived in the home until 1995.
The photo gives a good view of the house from the laneway. The house was built with even course cut limestone. The windows were all fitted with functioning wooden shutters that provided a form of climate control; these shutters remain on the house to this day. The house has retained many of its original features with a few exceptions. The original verandah of the home was removed in 1914 and an addition was added to the south side of the home by John S.H. Lind. In the early 1900s, a boardwalk led from the front of the house down to Elgin Street. Several species of ivy are growing up the wall of the building. Note the immaculate gardens surrounding the home. A gardener and arborist had worked for John. S.H. Lind; a variety of ornamental trees, shrubs and even fruits trees were planted on the property.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series. - Notes
